Trap-Neuter-Return
TNR is the method
of humanely trapping feral cats, having them spayed or neutered,
vaccinated for rabies and then returning them to their colony to live
out their lives. TNR also involves a colony caretaker who provides
food, adequate shelter and monitors the cats’ health. TNR has been
shown to be the least costly as well as the most efficient and humane
way of stabilizing feral cat populations.
MAAS will provide humane traps and trapping support for feral and stray cats in the Marlborough/Hudson area. We transport the cats to feral spay/neuter clinics for services, and return the cats to their home colonies afterwards.
At the spay/neuter clinic, the cats will be examined, spayed or neutered, given rabies and distemper vaccine, and ear mite/flea treatment. The left ear is 'tipped' - 3/8" of the tip of the ear is removed, marking the cat as sterilized and vaccinated.
The
cats recover, and are released to their home colony, to be fed and
maintained by their caregivers. Young kittens and friendly strays are
taken into our adoption programon a space available basis.
